Cikal bakal perusahaan Ceres sebetulnya perusahaan tua yang didirikan di Bandung, Jawa Barat, oleh orang Belanda, dengan nama NV Ceres. Ketika Jepang menduduki Indonesia, pemilik Ceres pulang ke Belanda dan menjualnya ke orang Indonesia dan berganti nama menjadai PT Ceres. Sejak krisis moneter, Ceres berganti kepemilikan, kemudian statusnya berubah menjadi PMA dengan induk perusahaan bernama Petra Foods yang bermaskar di Singapura, dan mayoritas sahamnya dikuasai keluarga Chuang
